You must have come across blogs or sites like boing boing where different writers post and get an author box with a couple of backlinks in return, to their website. This indicates Guest Blogging.

This method has been spammed to death and Google’s Matt Cutts says “over time it’s become a more and more spammy practice, and if you’re doing a lot of guest blogging then you’re hanging out with really bad company.”

Earlier guest blogging used to be a respected thing. There were authors who, you would have liked, to do a piece on your blog. Not anymore. Well, not entirely. There are blogs that are still respected and so are some authors. However with so many spammy authors and sites, guest blogging for back links has lost its effect.

You can still accept a guest post, if you know the author or the author is respected enough, my view: generally stay away if you do not know the author or the site seems to have either no connection to your or seems spammy.

Ideally you should work on building a reputation by being original on your blog, so Google starts recognizing you and showers some affection. It’s not necessary to post 5 articles a day that are ‘content generated’, what is essential though, is you post original content at least once a week to start with. This frequency can later be revised to either more or less once in two weeks, depending on how popular you get.

Once your reputation starts building, believe me it will :), you will see organic traffic coming your way on its own. To enhance it and move to the next level, get in touch with sites such as boing boing and request them to become a writer. But remember, all your hard work will go waste if you write about topics you have little knowledge of. Stick to what you know about!

You will get some links, but is it worth your while – depends – If you are looking at gaining recognition and have a long term view – go for it. It helps build your reputation and gets you more traffic, takes a loooong time. But be wary of guest posting everywhere. If you do – Google may just slap you and in extreme cases ruin your rankings.

Guest posting for backlinks is not a must, but it can be a small part of your overall SEO strategy. For me, I stay away from Guest Blogging as honestly, I don’t have the time.
